Our Commitment to SEND
At Bramley Grange Academy we are fully committed to providing equal opportunities for all pupils regardless of their ability or individual needs. As a specialist SEMH secondary school, we recognise that many of our pupils experience social, emotional and mental health needs alongside learning, communication, sensory or physical difficulties.
We believe that every child should:
- Feel safe, valued and understood
- Have their strengths recognised
- Receive appropriate support to succeed academically and personally
- Be prepared for adulthood and life beyond school
If additional support is required, we ensure pupils have access to reasonable adjustments, targeted strategies and specialist interventions tailored to their individual needs.
What types of SEND do we support?
To attend Bramley Grange Acdmey all must have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) which states Maintained Specialist Secondary School and their primary need being Social, Emotional and Mental Health.
We support pupils with a wide range of needs including:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Trauma, attachment and adverse childhood experiences
- ADHD and attention difficulties
- Traits of earning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia)
- Traits of sensory or physical needs
How do we identify if a pupil needs extra help?
We identify needs through:
- Close liaison with primary schools, previous settings and families
- Review of previous assessments, reports and EHCPs
- Baseline assessments on entry (literacy and numeracy)
- Ongoing teacher observation and monitoring
- Pastoral and behaviour data
- Pupil and parent voice
- Specialist assessments where required
Concerns are discussed promptly with the SENCo and pastoral team so support can be put in place early.
What should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?
Please contact:
- Your child’s class lead
- The SENCo
We will arrange a meeting to discuss concerns and agree next steps together.
How will the school support the learning of pupils with SEND?
All teachers at Bramley Grange Academy are teachers of pupils with SEND. High quality, adaptive teaching is our first priority.
Support may include:
- Differentiated and scaffolded lessons
- Learning Mentor in class support
- Small class sizes
- High student to adult ratio in class
- Personalised learning pathways
- Key worker or mentor support
- Therapeutic and SEMH interventions
- Literacy and numeracy catch‑up programmes
- Social skills and emotional regulation work
- Access to quiet/safe spaces
- Specialist or external professional support
- Movement breaks
Provision is reviewed regularly through a cycle of assess–plan–do–review.
What training and expertise do staff have?
Our staff team includes experienced teachers, pastoral staff and support staff trained to work with pupils with SEMH and additional needs.
Training includes areas such as:
- Trauma informed practice
- PRICE training
- Attachment awareness
- Behaviour regulation and de‑escalation
- Speech and language strategies
- Mental health first aid
- Safeguarding and child protection
- Inclusive teaching strategies
The SENCo works closely with external professionals including Educational Psychologists, CAMHS, Speech and Language Therapists and outreach services
How do we evaluate the effectiveness of provision?
We monitor effectiveness through:
- Regular progress tracking and assessment
- Behaviour and attendance data
- Pupil and parent feedback
- Review meetings and EHCP annual reviews
- Professional consultations
- Leadership and governor oversight
Provision is adjusted where necessary to ensure the best outcomes for each pupil.
How do we involve parents and carers?
We see education as a partnership with families.
Parents and carers are involved through:
- Weekly communication with class leads
- Half termly coffee mornings
- Termly academic reports
- Academic Review Days
- Annual Reviews
- Phone calls and meetings as needed
- Joint planning of support strategies
We encourage parents to contact us at any time if they have concerns.
What support is there for wellbeing?
As a specialist SEMH setting, wellbeing is central to our provision.
Support includes:
- Dedicated Intensive Support Team
- Therapeutic support and counselling
- Emotional literacy and regulation programmes
- Therapy Dogs
- Safe and quiet spaces
- Restorative approaches
- Positive behaviour systems
- Home School Link Worker
- Safeguarding and child protection team
- First aid and medical support
We promote strong relationships, routine and consistency to help pupils feel safe and ready to learn.
How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom?
We are committed to inclusion in all aspects of school life including:
- Trips and visits
- Enrichment activities
- Sports
- Developing links with the local Community
Where necessary, individual risk assessments and additional support are put in place so all pupils can participate safely.
Transition into Bramley Grange Academy
We support transition through:
- Visits to previous schools
- Meetings with families and professionals
- Transition days and tours
- Personalised transition plans
- Gradual timetables if required
Our aim is to ensure every pupil feels secure and ready to begin their journey with us.
Preparing for adulthood and Post‑16
We prepare pupils for the next stage through:
- Careers education and guidance
- Work‑related learning and life skills
- Independent travel and independence skills where appropriate
- Links with colleges, training providers and alternative provisions
- Transition Reviews for all pupils in Year 11
We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure successful next steps.
Complaints about SEND provision
If you have concerns, please speak first with your child’s tutor or the SENCo. We aim to resolve issues quickly and collaboratively.
If concerns remain, you may contact the Headteacher and follow the school’s complaints procedure available on our website.
