Brave Student Honoured with Good Citizen Award

Brave Student Honoured with Good Citizen Award

Sam McConnel has been recognised for his remarkable bravery after helping to rescue a man from a burning vehicle in Tilford.

Sam McConnel was spending a quiet Saturday afternoon fishing with his father when he noticed a van had caught fire nearby. Without hesitation, Sam ran toward the vehicle and discovered a man inside who appeared unaware of the danger. Acting quickly, he woke the driver and helped him and his dog escape safely from the burning van, while his father contacted emergency services.

After ensuring the immediate safety of those involved, Sam remained at the scene, assisting by guiding firefighters to the vehicle and helping to keep members of the public at a safe distance until emergency crews arrived.

Firefighters later confirmed that Sam’s swift and decisive actions may have prevented a far more serious outcome.

In recognition of his courage and strong sense of community, Bramley Grange Academy awarded Sam a Good Citizen Award. To further celebrate his actions, the school arranged a special fishing experience for him, while London South East Academies Trust presented him with a new tackle box.

Despite the recognition, Sam remained modest. When his PE and fishing teacher, Kenton Wye, spoke to him about the incident, Sam responded simply: “Why would I not help that person?”

Staff at Bramley Grange Academy expressed immense pride in Sam’s actions, highlighting him as an example of the values the Trust seeks to nurture in all its students.

“Sam has demonstrated exceptional courage, compassion and responsibility,” said a spokesperson for Bramley Grange Academy. “We are incredibly proud to have him as part of our community. His actions embody the spirit of service and integrity we strive to instil across our schools.”

Sam’s story stands as a powerful reminder of the impact young people can have when they act with bravery and selflessness.
