Mathematics
Vision
At Bramley Grange Academy, our Mathematics curriculum provides a coherent, ambitious learning journey from Year 7 to Year 11. We believe every pupil can succeed in mathematics, and we are committed to developing confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who achieve the best possible outcomes—academically, personally and for future life.
Intent
We set high expectations from Year 7 through to Key Stage 4. Our curriculum ensures that every learner can access high-quality mathematical learning, make strong progress and secure the most appropriate qualification for their next steps. Across all phases, our curriculum develops deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency rooted in number sense, reasoning and problem‑solving skills, and confidence with mathematical language and representation.
Implementation
Numeracy is a priority throughout school. Pupils develop secure number facts, efficient mental and written strategies, and confidence applying maths to real-life contexts. In Year 7 and 8, we strengthen foundational numeracy; in Years 9–11, numeracy underpins success in both Functional Skills pathways and GCSE mathematics.
We use termly assessments to identify strengths, highlight gaps, and diagnose misconceptions. Teachers use assessment insights to adapt planning, refine modelling, and design targeted intervention. Leaders track progress over time ensuring pupils remain on track for their qualification pathway.
Where assessments or observations identify students who require additional support, intervention is in place to provide one-to-one or small group teaching to ensure these students can keep up with the curriculum.
In KS4, students follow the most appropriate pathway:
-GCSE Mathematics (Foundation and Higher)
- Functional Skills Mathematics (Level 1 or Level 2)
-Level 1/2 certificate in Number and Measure
Each pathway is ambitious and tailored to pupil need, ensuring every learner secures a recognised qualification. We promote resilience, curiosity and confidence, showing pupils that everyone can succeed in maths.
Impact
By the end of Year 11, pupils at Bramley Grange Academy achieve well in mathematics and demonstrate secure, retained knowledge that enables them to progress confidently to the next stage of education, employment or training. Assessment information shows that pupils make strong and sustained progress from their varied starting points, including those who require additional numeracy support. Gaps in understanding are swiftly identified and addressed through targeted intervention.
Pupils acquire fluency in fundamental skills and the ability to reason and solve problems with increasing independence. Work in books, assessment outcomes and pupil voice all show that pupils understand the sequence of learning and can apply prior knowledge to more complex concepts over time. As a result, pupils are well prepared for the most appropriate qualification pathway—GCSE, Functional Skills or Number and Measure—and leave the academy as confident, resilient mathematicians equipped with the numeracy skills needed for life beyond school.
